Acer palmatum 'Kotobuki'

Rare Pink Variegated Japanese Maple

Kotobuki Japanese Maple

Zones 5-9

'Kotobuki' is a unique new dwarf introduction from Japan. It leafs out in the early spring with bright pink and white variegation on a green background. 'Kotobuki' has a lot more pink variegation than other similar types, so much that the stemming on new growth may be bright pink as well. It is also unique in its shape. It will reach 6 ft tall by 5 ft wide in 10 years making a dense dwarf. The secondary growth is even pinker than the spring growth, giving a great mid-summer interest in the garden. Due to its small shape, 'Kotobuki' is ideal for container growing. Fall colors are bright oranges to bright reds infused with pink variegation.

Trimming back branches in the winter to early spring (right before the tree leafs out) can lead to the most pink variegation. Continual pruning every spring will lead to a heavy pink candy striping throughout the older green bark of the tree giving an additional winter interest.

Limited Quantities Available !! As we have over a thousand cultivars of Japanese maples, we often do not have many of each cultivar. We recommend that you buy the Japanese maples you want immediately as we often sell out of certain selections.

By constantly prowling about the Limited Availability Sale list, the guy I live with, has succeeded in acquiring, numerous JM’s ( that were on our ‘Must Have” List) and Acer p. ‘Kotobuki’, was one of the most recent score’s. It was one of eight, 1-gallon Acers that arrived this week in a medium shipping box, 2 of which were 1 gallon-XL’s!

Arriving the day before Valentines Day, all of the trees were still, fully dormant. Good thing too, as the temperature here that morning was 13 degrees F!

The packaging professionals, at MrMaple are wizards at their craft. All 8 trees were so superbly-tucked into that 1 box, that not one of the slightest twig was broken on any tree, pure magic! The cold temperatures these trees were exposed to ( en-route to us ), had temporarily bent a couple of branches, into their short-term, “tucked-in” positions, however a little hand-working (come spring) will remedy that.

A.p. ‘Kotobuki’ was the standout tree, among that boxful of young beauties.
A miniature tree of eye-pleasing proportions. A single trunk, with a slight, sinuous curve, and many well-spaced branches. Almost Bonsai-ish!

Once the buds start to swell, it will be unpotted, the rootball “opened-up” and root-pruned (if need be) then repotted into a decorative ceramic pot, and most all of the secondary branchlets will be pruned, to encourage new growth, which will enhance an even greater, variegation display!

Absolutely thrilled to add this treasure-tree, to our collection. Another super-satisfying experience, and so very grateful to everyone in the MrMaple team for making it so!
