Picea sitchensis
'Papoose'
Dwarf Sitka Spruce
Zones 5-9
Picea sitchensis 'Papoose' is a slow-growing spruce with sharp, two-toned needles in shades of blue and green. In late spring, clusters of buds emerge at the branch tips, creating blossom-like bursts of fresh foliage. When young, this compact tree forms a dense, rounded shape, eventually developing a central leader that matures into a tight, upright, and broad form. Discovered by Gordon Bentham on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, this unique spruce transitions from a neat globe to a larger, spherical structure over time. After 10 years, 'Papoose' typically reaches 2 to 3 ft in height and 3 to 4 ft in width, retaining its compact, rounded form before gradually adopting a broader, upright shape. Its slow growth and tidy habit make it an excellent choice for small gardens, rockeries, or container planting.
